I have to admit that I'm one of those Portnoy fans too, who still miss him in Dream Theater - also becaus his current work couldn't by far match his great past in DT. I've been disappointed by much of the latest DT material as the band for me has grown too much into a progmetal rather than a melodic prog band.
Anyway, this new record somehow proves me wrong as I do appreciate Petruccis melodic guitar work combined with the stunning technician that Rudess is. I caught myself imagining that Portnoy is playing drums and everything looked fine. So, Mangini isn't that bad a drummer after all :-)
All in all I have to accept that 'my' Dream Theater of the nineties with albums like Awake or later on my favourite record of all time, Scenes from a Memory, is gone now and that there's the new DT era going which is bringing me more and more pleasure listening to. Well done on this one, guys!
I wonder how much Portnoy pays these losers to give bad reviews.Personally I don't miss him at all. Especially the bad vocals like the other review stated. Classic songs like 6:00? I think not. There were plenty of bad songs to go around along with the good.
The more I listen to this album the more I love it.
This album rocks and is Petrucci's best Melodic lead work since Black Clouds. Still the Portnoy wannabes still find it necessary to bash the band every chance they get. Prior to his departure Portnoy provided nothing but bad vocals and overpowering drums that did not fit the sonds. Mangini is a much better fit. Dream Theater is still a mainstay in the progressive metal scene. More than we can say for Portnoy's 30 plus bands that no one cares about. And they have the loyal fan base and record sales to prove it which is the bottom line.<br>

Destroyed over time..this once great band is now just a shadow of their glorious past..another monotonous album that fails to create any positive impression on their fans, the same type they have been churning out for the last 10 years..they are just not the same band since Mike Portnoy left and never will be..If you want to listen to the best they ever put out then listen to all their 90's albums each of them were masterpieces..
